OUR PLAYREADING SERIES GATHERS EVERY FOURTH SUNDAY OF THE MONTH IN DELRAY BEACH, FLORIDA AND IS LED BY MISS DONNI.
--> Scripts & Writers
Think "book club" without the homework and with all the interactive fun of hearing and discussing a new play by or about Africa's diaspora. The script is read live as a Table-Read while our Playwright-of-the-Month listens via video-conference. While actors are auditioned in advance to read the lead roles, others are welcome to read other roles or simply enjoy as the audience, which is equally essential for our writer to hear the immediate feedback from.
Joining Donni & our Playwright-of-the-Month are:
Thespians Theatre Enthusiasts
Poets Spoken Word Artists
Editors Drama Teachers English Teachers
Stage Actors Screen Actors Voice Actors
Writers Authors Grad Students
NEW MEMBERS are always welcome. RSVPs politely encouraged.
ACTORS wishing to audition for the Workshops' Actors Pool should click here.
Our pre-selected writers are from all walks of life: from novelists, poets and even previously published playwrights to actors, teachers, and overseas military! They understand that plays are written to be performed, not read. Thus, the need to hear their dialogue aloud is essential for the rewrites to come. Further, Donni and other professionals in the industry offer playwrights realities of the production aspects of their words. Finally, as the writers are usuallyof Black descent themselves, they tend to write characters that share their culture and experiences. There is no cost to the playwright to submit their script for consideration. Instead, an agreement to artistically collaborate and, eventually, list a Workshop credit to MULTUS Productions in future printings is all that is required.
The genres of our selections run the gamut from comedy to the absurd. Alas, the most commonly submitted for consideration are those that depict our very real lives. Playwrights, understandably, tend to create characters that look like themselves, interact with daily, or share a common culture. With the majority of produced and published playwrights, as well as theatre producers and artistic directors not being of the African diaspora, too few plays are written with Black characters in central situations. And outside of a major theatre-hub like New York, audiences tend not to accept color-blind casting as willingly. Thus, there are fair fewer roles for Black actors beyond maids, slaves, and sidekicks. So, our mission is to get more plays by-or-about Blacks published so there are more options for producing houses to have for consideration... and more actors can get to work in lead roles!

AN HONEST NOTE FROM DONNI
"As a Director, I'll admit this group is rather self-serving :) Apart from building relationships with playwrights whose works I may wish to direct one day, along with you all, I'll get to hear so many works read-aloud, as they're meant to be. Alas, I'm hoping fellow Thespians find the fun in interacting with like-minded folks. Both classics, popular, as well as new. Definitely a wonderful opportunity for new Playwrights to be "heard" and Actors/Directors/Etc to network a bit! All voices (and ears) welcome to the Table Readings."
